Do you get the same feeling that I do, that everything out there these days seems to be pizza, Thai or sushi, or some combination thereof? Well, rejoice, there's now a takeout/catering place (at least until the fall when they plan on opening for dinner) that will wake up your taste buds with the lilting intensities of Caribbean/Creole cuisine.

What you will be struck by is the multitude of tastes emanating from each dish and a slow building heat that appears after you've savored each and every flavor - yet it doesn't send you rushing to the water pitcher to put out any fires. ……

I was completely blown away by Dhat Island. Truly, it was one of the most exceptional eating experiences I have had to date. Right off the top of my head: tasty cuisine, generous portions, and VALUE.
I was so excited I called my son to join us! If you know my son, JR, well, he often salts his food before even tasting it – here he didn’t do it once. Each dish was perfectly seasoned with just a little bite. Now, you all know I don’t like spicy food, but this was really well done…a perfect balance of spice without taking away from the flavor. We learned that you could order each dish mild, medium and spicy! We had the mild version.

"Dhat Island is great!  I'm so happy Caribbean food has finally made it to Redlands and, honestly, this is some of the best I've had--- including spots I went to in Boston and New York.  Plus the atmosphere is fun and the people are welcoming and sweet.   I definitely recommend it."

Run, don't walk, to Dhat Island, for an experience that will transport you from Redlands, the Land of Bland straight to the islands! As I type this, I am shoveling their pasta salad into my mouth and it is HEAVEN. I could eat buckets of it. Perfectly blanched veggies (beautiful baby green and wax beans, baby carrots, peas) crunchy radishes, onions and sweet red pepper-combined with pasta, dressing, a hint of cilantro and a bite of bird pepper-all together it's a perfect blend of crunch and creaminess. The Dhat chicken is a boneless, flattened breast filet seared and seasoned to perfection, and is unbelievably tender. How did they get chicken off the bone to be so tender??? Bourbon chicken is equally tender with a hint of sweetness. Creole meatballs are tdf! Meals are served with plantains (sweet or green-sweet are so so SO delish,) and beans and rice (you choose red or black beans-both delish.) They also have a vegetarian entree daily. Have I gushed enough? I just have to-this is the best food I've ever had in Redlands. My kids love the food, too. Dhat Island has take away for dinner and lunch and they also do catering. They're super nice-will give you samples-that's all it will take for you to be hooked. Prices are very reasonable. Thrilled to have them in Redlands!

"We have eaten at Dhat Island at least 3 times now, and the food is fantastic!  Angela Alce makes the BEST black beans & rice dish that I have ever had outside of Key West...real Cuban flavor.  Lots of flavor with just enough heat."
